SIMILAR WORDS – SPLIT AND SPILT

Something that is SPLIT is broken into parts. The word “split” is also used to describe divisions or disagreements between people or between groups of people.

SPLIT

e.g. “Psychedelic Glaswegian folk band Trembling Bells are using Record Store Day to announce their split, issuing one final EP as their swan song.”

“Under the right conditions the nucleus splits into two pieces and energy is released. This process is called nuclear fission.”

However, if something (such as a liquid) is SPILT, it flows out of its container.

SPILT

“Previous research by Amnesty has revealed that the information in these reports is often inaccurate. For example, Shell massively understated the amount of oil spilt in the fishing town of Bodo between 2008 and 2009.”

“Wayne Wright paints different shapes, faces and iconic images – using only spilt cold coffee, a brush and a canvas.”
